Focus and Scope

From the year 2013 the scientific and research journal Zainak. Cuadernos de Antropología-Etnografía is now published in digital format and with number 37 (corresponding to 2019) it becomes a fully part of the OJS publishing system, with a growing presence on international electronic journals platforms.

Zainak. Cuadernos de Antropología-Etnografía in its new era as of 2019, are open to research preferably coming from anthropology, ethnology and ethnography, be these theoretical, empirical or applied to field studies on the ground, although admits proposals that from the anthropological perspective connect with related disciplines, especially in the field of social sciences as well as the arts and humanities. The scientific-academic and methodical character of the original research works at least 80% whose methodological approaches, content corpus and critical discussions connect with the dimensions of socio-cultural analysis, structured in lines and developments that cross contemporary themes, are taken into consideration, with special interest in inter- and trans-disciplinary approaches. The journal will guarantee a maximum opening of authors outside both the collegiate organic-editorial structure and the publishing entity, which will reach at least 70%.

Zainak. Cuadernos de Antropología-Etnografía admits manuscripts continuously, which after having passed the evaluation system by double blind pair (peer review), are assigned to the corresponding numbers. The evaluators issue a reasoned report, through which a reasoned communication of the editorial decision is made to the authors. An annual number published on the web between November- December of each current year is usually edited. The edition of specific monographs can be contemplated according to the collected materials that can be integrated into the sections of the journal, including reviews of a critical and reflective nature made on recent publications in the anthropological areas in particular, the social sciences as well as the arts and humanities in general. The Director, Editorial Team and Editorial Board of Zainak. Cuadernos de Antropología- Etnografía have as objective and firm commitment to participate and increase the presence in platforms of scientific anthropology journals at an international level, gradually improving and clarifying the profile of the journal, with the corresponding Sections and the article selection policy. For this, links are being established with other academic institutions and scientific societies in order to continuously improve the influx of papers and publication proposals from both a quantitative and qualitative point of view, while the alternative sections are made more dynamic. Likewise, as the respective numbers are designed and compiled, improvements are included in regard to the assignment of reviewers, evaluation times, publication guidelines, fluency in communication with the authors / as and above all the presence in international higher education centers and in the indexing databases that seek a qualification in terms of quality and innovation.

ORGANIC FUNCTIONS OF THE STRUCTURE: DIRECTION, EDITING AND MANAGEMENT

Zainak. Cuadernos de Antropología-Etnografía has management and direction bodies, a large part of whose members are foreign to the publishing entity, responsible for the scientific coordination and editing of each issue.

The Editorial Team takes care of the reception and monitoring of the originals throughout the evaluation and publication process. It ensures the integrity of this process. The Editorial Team will be made up, at least, by the Director of the journal as well as a Section Editor. In its constitution, one or more editors who will be incorporated into the journal may intervene, who will fulfill the role of Section Editors, when their structure so requires. The Editorial Team will be in charge of communication with the authors, the evaluators, the members of the Editorial Board and the Scientific Committee. This Editorial Team will be in charge of the complete editing process of the regular or special issues of the journal, including the order, the preparation of the summary and the pre-printing.

The Editorial Board will assist the Editorial Team and the Director of the journal in all their functions, and especially in the follow-up of the proposed works (reception, review and evaluation, acceptance or not) as well as in the definition of the contents and the style of the publication (drafting and modification of rules for the presentation of originals, creation and orientation of the sections, etc.). The members of the Editorial Board will be people as university research staff who are experts in the subjects covered by the journal. The members of the same will attend the meetings that are called and will collaborate in the search for evaluators, in addition to advising in the tasks that are considered pertinent, supervising the fulfillment of norms, the punctuality and periodicity of the journal.

The International Scientific Committee will be made up of personalities and professionals of recognized prestige and extensive experience who demonstrate an undoubted international research solvency, without institutional ties to the journal. They will print rigor to the publication and will have to review the ordinary and monographic numbers for the improvement proposal. They may collaborate in evaluation processes and audits of the journal itself and participate as reviewers of articles, as long as one of the peer reviewers is external.

As of issue 41 (2023), an External Advisory Council is incorporated, with academic representation and international mobility in its composition, made up of professionals and research staff of recognized solvency, without institutional links with Zainak journal or with Eusko Ikaskuntza/ Basque Studies Society, aimed at setting the editorial policy, as well as subjecting it to periodic evaluation and audit.

The evaluators or peer reviewers will be appointed by the Editorial Team and the Editorial Board, after hearing the Scientific Committee, from among the expert National and international personnel in the field considered capable of assuming said responsibility, foreign to the publishing entity. They must act with scientific rigor and impartiality in all their attributions and decisions in this regard.

The Director will be in charge of coordinating the collegiate bodies and institutional representation of the journal before the scientific community, dealing with functional relations with Eusko Ikaskuntza / Sociedad de Estudios Vascos. It will try to resolve the disagreements together with the Editorial Board and the Scientific Committee, who will contribute to the regularity and increase of the quality of the journal, its indexing and inclusion in new international databases, achievement of the quality seals and initiatives that result in its greatest recognition. The detection of coincidences and similarities will be sought, maintaining the standards of originality. The articles must respond to clear demands for the safeguarding of research ethics in the sources and data collected, as well as field work, rejection of plagiarism, discussions in which scientific progress prevails in humanistic and sociocultural disciplines, search for uninterested conclusions. As a standardized channel of dissemination for the scientific community, self-citations and citations in favor of third parties are avoided, avoiding partiality in the bibliographical selection, with the application of an adequate methodology for each field of study and the theoretical-epistemological foundation of all works, including essays.

Peer Review Process

The directorate and the collegiate organic-editorial strucutre of the journal, with the institutional or professional affiliation of each member identified individually in the technical sheet, organize and distribute the editing process of each issue between the Editorial Board and the external reviewers, being ultimately responsible for the content and adaptation of the issue. At the same time, the editorial team and the editorial board will work to enrich the panel of external expert reviewers and evaluators, independent of the collegiate structure, as well as updating the international scientific committee.

Likewise, as the respective numbers are designed and compiled, improvements are included in regard to the assignment of reviewers, evaluation times, publication guidelines, fluency in communication with the authors / as and above all the presence in international higher education centers and in the indexing databases that seek a qualification in terms of quality and innovation.

Each article proposed for the scientific and research journal Zainak. Cuadernos de Antropología-Etnografía undergoes a first round of review by two external evaluators. If in this first round a disparity of criteria were found, a second round would serve as arbitration and qualification of the evaluations, which in the last instance, are endorsed or rejected by the Editorial Team and the Editorial Board, before the communication of their acceptance or rejection of the authors.

Open access policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content, based on the principle that offering the public free access to research supports greater global exchange of knowledge, in line with the idea of 'open science'. Likewise, coincidentally and linked to the edition of each issue, a final version peer reviewed and accepted for publication of each work is deposited in an open access repository, incorporating a persistent identifier of the object to facilitate its location, with the intention to comply with the FAIR principles for data sets (easy to find, accessible, interoperable and reusable).
